Provide accompaniment for all Rainbow Promise (1 st -3 rd) and Rainbow Connection (4 th-6 th) rehearsals. Provide accompaniment for all Chancel Choir rehearsals. Based on arrangements with DMM, worship leading through music includes congregational singing, service music as indicated in #8 below, as well as choir and other special music accompaniment. Prepare and play all service music for Sunday services, both virtual and in-person. Be open to new ideas and be able to work as a collaborative musician. Be well-organized and capable of following through to completion on plans and ideas. Understand the role of music in worship with knowledge of appropriate repertoire. Strong sightreading skills are necessary. Have experience and skill in hymn leading and service playing. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in piano or organ. The Elder for Worship is the Director of Music Ministries’ representative to the Session. STAFF RELATIONS: The Pianist/Accompanist works under the direct supervision of the Director of Music Ministries (DMM) who is responsible to the Pastor(s) as Head-of-Staff. Congregational singing is an important part of the worship ministry the pianist is expected to provide strong leadership in setting the style and imparting the message of the congregational hymns.Ī Bachelor’s degree in piano or organ is required significant experience and skill in service playing is required. The person who fills this position must be one who is always well prepared, an accomplished sight-reader, and open to a variety of styles of music. The congregation expects high quality execution of worship music by the pianist/accompanist. If they are working collaboratively with other musicians they also need creative skills.Burke Presbyterian Church is seeking a talented and collaborative pianist to accompany adult and children’s choirs and lead worship service music. An Accompanist needs to have a high level of musical proficiency, and to be flexible and sensitive to the style and needs of the musicians or artists they are working with. Many have other work to supplement their income, often as musicians or teachers, or in other roles in the music industry. Musicians who work as Accompanists are usually self employed. The term Accompanist is also used to refer to a musician who is used during an audition or rehearsal for a theater production or other performance to stand in for the actual musician or musicians who will perform on the night. A number of classical pianists have become famous as Accompanists rather than soloists. 
Sometimes Accompanists are referred to by the title collaborative artist or collaborative pianist, which reflects the growing appreciation of the nature of the role. Working together on an arrangement by rehearsing and discussing ideas allows both parties to produce a well thought out and exciting program of music. The most usual combinations are piano and voice, guitar and voice, organ and voices (choral), but other combinations like violin and voice, saxophone and voice or percussion and voice can be equally successful.īeing an Accompanist can be particularly rewarding when they and the singer or other musicians have the opportunity to collaborate and to build a rapport.

A singer can hire an Accompanist for an individual performance or series of shows if no other accompaniment is available, so the Accompanist needs to be a bit of a juggler! As well as sight reading the music, they have to listen to the singers intonation and phrasing in order to adapt their playing to each singers unique style of performing.Īny instrument can be used to accompany the voice - including other voices.

An Accompanist is often, but not always, a pianist.
An Accompanist is usually somebody who supports a singer, choir or an instrumentalist, by playing a musical accompaniment.
